Opponents of equal marriage often make a case against equal marriage using scientific research that allegedly supports ‘traditional’ marriage. Meanwhile, its defenders rely on “inevitability” and a claim to rights rarely matched with responsibilities. A lack of genuine intellectual enquiry has led to a stalemate.
So does the “evidence” stack up? And is it responsible to give way to inevitability without defining the obligations which accompany the rights demanded?
About our speakers
Helen Dale has degrees from Oxford, UQ and Edinburgh and now works in commercial law at a private practice in Edinburgh, where she has a particular interest in start-up finance, angel investing and entrepreneurship. She won the Law Society of Scotland’s annual essay award in 2012 for her paper ‘A Plea in Law for Equal Marriage’ and she writes regularly for The Skeptic. About 20 years ago she wrote the novel ‘The Hand That Signed The Paper’ under the pseudonym Helen Demidenko. The book won the Miles Franklin Award (among others), and went on to cause significant controversy.
Tim Wilson is Freedom Commissioner at the Human Rights Commission. Former roles include Director of Climate Change Policy and the Intellectual Property and Free Trade Unit at the Institute of Public Affairs and Senior Fellow at New York’s Center for Medicine in the Public Interest. The IPA is delighted to be welcoming internationally renowned scientist Dr Patrick Michaels for a tour of Australia in April and May. Patrick is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington D.C., and formerly a professor at the University of Virginia. He’s the author of many important books on climate change, includingMeltdown: The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media and Climate of Extremes: Global Warming Science They Don’t Want You to Know which he co-authored.
Patrick’s visit to Australia will come at a vital time in the debate about climate change, as the parliament prepares to repeal the carbon tax, reviews the Renewable Energy Target and considers other expensive measures to supposedly tackle global warming, like direct action.
The IPA will be holding Climate Change Briefing Sessions for IPA members and supporters around the country. It will be an opportunity for you to hear from experts and ask them questions about the latest on climate change science.
The briefings will be presented by two outstanding scientists - IPA Emeritus Fellow Professor Bob Carter, and Professor Stewart Franks from the University of Tasmania. Both Professor Carter and Professor Franks are contributors to Climate Change: The Facts 2014.
The event is complimentary but RSVP is essential as places are limited.
