Mannkal’s next workshop will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, 20th January, with the topic ‘Lessons From London’. Hear firsthand from a former Mannkal intern, Sharni Cutajar, about the lessons she learnt at the Institute of Economic Affairs in the heart of Westminster. From foreign aid to the sugar tax, the sharing economy to Brexit, Sharni’s journey will be inspirational listening for all.
There will be a presentation followed by questions and a roundtable discussion of the ideas presented.

While attendance at workshops is not mandatory in order to receive a Mannkal scholarship, attendance is highly recommended, as the knowledge gained is vital to success in a Mannkal scholarship.

The National Security Network is an initiative that seeks to engage politicians, defence, and national security professionals on Australian and global defence matters.

We are delighted to announce that the Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP will be addressing the National Security Network in February.

Minister Pyne will update us on the implementation of the Defence Industry Policy Statement and on the importance, and potential of the defence industry sector to our economy, technology, and nation.

The Minister will also speak on the promotion of export markets for our world class material: just the first step in a Defence Export Strategy currently under development that will create new markets overseas and help boost the Australian economy.

Second Rush: Mining and the Transformation of Australia with David Lee and Hon Ian Macfarlane

Mining and the Transformation of Australia tells a story that must be told and celebrated. This book puts the lie to the claim that mining is a sunset industry that is holding Australia back and celebrates it in all its complexity and success. Initially the bedrock on which Australia was built, mining went into a cultural decline until the 60s when it resurged. David Lee is a renowned historian of modern Australia, and his book will be launched by Hon Ian Macfarlane, former Federal Resources Minister, and now CEO of the Queensland Resources Council. Click here to book.

The Second Rush began unexpectedly from the 1960s with the development of new export industries, the most prominent being coal, iron ore and bauxite. The mining boom turned Australia’s chronic balance of payments around; substantially influenced Australia’s turn to Asia; and underpinned the era of optimism and nationalism of the late 1960s and 1970s. The Second Rush continued through the “resources boom” of the late 1970s and 1980s. At the turn of the new century, few saw any great future for mining after the harder times of the 1980s and 1990s, but then Australia embarked on its greatest boom – the China resources boom from 2002 to 2012.

Mr Lilley, a current member of the House of Commons, will be speaking on the topic Brexit, Trump and the Trade Challenge

At a time of flux and uncertainty in US and European politics, there has never been a more important time to discuss what this all means for Australian trade. An Exiting the European Union Select Committee member, Mr Lilley will offer an articulate, international perspective on these events’ impact upon Australia’s trade deals and relationships with Britain and the US, what our government should do and how we can better protect ourselves from global forces.

Politics and the Budget: down the slippery economic slope we go! Breakfast event

 

The federal budget was tabled some time ago, yet the controversy it sparked continues. The budget joined other recent government announcements including those on energy, school funding and immigration, to raise major concerns about the quality and rigour of public policy and the influence of populism. Meanwhile, the way federal parliament is working — or not working — makes it harder for any government to implement worthwhile reforms.

This breakfast event on Wednesday 12 July will focus on the budget and how political trends now play a large part in shaping it. Speakers will also discuss the likelihood of the avowed major budget repair objective being achieved and the quality of the specific measures proposed to meet that objective. Particular attention will be paid to the new bank tax and the balance between expenditure restraint (or lack of it) and tax increases.

The Sir Thomas McIlwraith Lecture is an annual lecture to celebrate contributions to Queensland’s growth that show initiative and individual enterprise. It is named after an early premier of Queensland who was responsible for a number of nation building projects such as railways and ports.

Jamie Pherous started business life as a chartered accountant, leaving Arthur Anderson to open Corporate Travel Management in 1994. His first client was Queensland Coal. In his first year of operations he booked just $16 million of travel in 2001. The figure in 2016 was $3.587 billion. Growth has been organic and by acquisition, and stunning.
