Making Australia Right – with James Allan, Nick Cater and Rebecca Weisser

Making Australia Right is a book of essays about what’s wrong with Australia and how to fix it written by people in a good position to know. It will be launched in Brisbane by the former editor of the Australian, Nick Cater. Other speakers will be Professor James Allan and Rebecca Weisser. Click here to book.

What you have here are top people in their fields giving you something you will not find on the ABC, namely an outlook and an analysis that is something other than the bog-standard left-wing perspective that dominates so much of the airwaves, the newspaper columns, what you find on social media – and these days, alas, even what some Liberal MPs will voice inside the party room. James Allan, from the Introduction.

Cost is $10 for AIP members and $20 for non-members and includes the first drink free. To book, click here.

What you will find is a variety of treatments on some of the most important issues facing this country. The line-up for this book is as follows. Judith Sloan considers the economy; Brendan O’Neill tackles political correctness; Gary Johns writes on inequality; Jim Molan surveys defence; Roger Franklin goes more big picture and explains the causes for his anger at the Liberal Party; Rebecca Weisser examines the media in this country; Graeme Haycroft does the same with industrial relations; James Allan at the state of play in our universities; Kerryn Pholi writes on Aboriginal Australia; Jeremy Sammut discusses health; Lorraine Finlay takes on law-making; Peter Kurti delves into religion and the new sectarianism; Steve Kates scrutinizes interest rate policy; and Alan Moran finishes the collection off by looking at energy policy. So fourteen chapters in all, and each one approached in a different way.

Nick Cater introduces climate change economist, commentator and writer Alan Moran to speak about his new book “Climate Change: Treaties and Policies in the Trump Era”.

How will the Trump presidency effect climate change responses?
Who sets the climate agenda now?
What are the costs to Australia in pursuing the current agenda?
With Trump demolishing the Paris Agreement, what is Australia’s exit strategy?
How can we return to reliable, low-cost energy supply and avoid the debilitating policies favouring renewables?

These questions and more discussed and answered on the day by two of Australia’s most recognised commentators on these important and topical issues.

Special thanks to Connor Court Publishing, cosponsors of this important event.

Brisbane – The Tyranny of Tolerance; Threats to Religious Liberty in Australia

The Centre for Independent Studies invites you, on behalf of Connor Court Publishing, to the book release of The Tyranny of Tolerance by Peter Kurti. With remarks from Professor James Allan and Peter Kurti in Brisbane.

It was a confident expectation for more than a century that religion — its beliefs, doctrines and institutions — would atrophy in the face of growing secularisation. But not only has traditional Christianity survived in liberal western societies; other faiths, most conspicuously Islam, have increasingly become a perceptible presence. This evolution gives rise to many questions about the place of religion in liberal democratic society.

In a time of ‘fake news’ and social media mobs, Kurti’s thoughtful deliberation about the meaning of tolerance and its tension with political liberty is indispensable. He critiques the origin of Australian multiculturalism and the corrosive cultural effect of codifying diversity in discrimination law. This book is a measured, scholarly treatment of a subject too often submerged in superficial polemic. It resurrects religious freedom and restores the principle to its rightful place in the heart of 21st-century democracy. — Jennifer Oriel

Kurti exposes a grand deception: the tolerance and diversity brigade cannot tolerate diversity of thought. — Nick Cater
