Hosted by Students for Sensible Drug Policy

Filippino President, Rodrigo Duterte in the last few months has committed the illegal mass murder of thousands of his citizens. Any person who is suspected of being involved in the illicit drugs trade is under threat of being hunted down and shoot by government sanctioned millitants. This includes those who buy, use and / or sell drugs, and often, are the most disenfranchised.

Despite a number of attempts from the international community, Duterte shows no indication of ceasing the blatant human rights violations carried out in his name. To launch the Melbourne, ‘Global Week of Action’ against the continuance of these killings, Harm Reduction Victoria, Harm Reduction Australia. The Yarra Drug and Health Forum and SSDP Australia invite you to participate in a peaceful protest outside the front of the Philippines Consulate, in Queens Rd, Melbourne.

Banners, a petition and flyers will arrive by 8am to catch morning traffic. Other forms of advocacy including an Embassy Statement, radio annoucements and further collaboration with associate groups is in the pipeline for throughout the week. Please show your support and click ‘attend.’

1920s Underground Prohibition Party @ Korova
Nov 12 @ 8:30 pm – Nov 13 @ 4:00 am

14650166_1089716047809191_4682106894385257108_n

Australia and New Zealand Students for Liberty and Students for Sensible Drug Policy Australia are bonding together for a snazzy party to cap off the semester – the 1920s Underground Prohibition Party.

If the 1920s taught America one policy lesson, it was that prohibition doesn’t work. When The States tried to outlaw alcohol, booze was made in bathtubs, was outsourced to gangs, and alcohol didn’t go away – it just shifted underground. We have a similar situation today – governments waste millions and billions on prohibition policies which protect drug cartels, ruin people’s lives, and squash civil liberties. These policies disproportionately affect marginalised communities, such as POC, women, the poor, queer and trans people.

The tyrannical Drug War has failed in its entirety.
This party isn’t just a call-to-arms for students against drug prohibition, but also a fantastic night with heaps of equally passionate young people. There will be guest speakers, drink deals, prohibition-era cocktails, live performers of all sorts and DJ’s until late – and it’ll be one hell of a night.

Doors open at Korova Milk Bar at 8:30pm on Saturday 12th November, and entry is $15 for students, and $25 for non-students, with the proceeds supporting SSDP and ANZSFL, fundraising for future projects. Tickets are available online here: (https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/sflssdp-1920s-underground-prohibition-party-tickets-28777739995) or on the door.

Come along, have a great time, and stand with us against the drug war!

Politics in the Pub – Leyonhjelm, Roberts & Laming. Game On! @ The Ship Inn - Southbank
Dec 2 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

15109493_1130718080337161_8802891833382526280_n

LibertyWorks presents Politics in the Pub with 3 Speakers from 3 separate political parties. Game On!

SPEAKER: Senator David Leyonhjelm – Liberal Democrats leader and senator from NSW

David was returned to the Federal Senate in 2016 after becoming the first Liberal Democrat elected federally in 2014. He is a libertarian (or classical liberal) who wants government “wound back to a minimal role in society”. As a crossbencher, David’s vote is crucial for the the LNP government to pass legislation, a position that he is not afraid to leverage. When asked recently if he was holding the government to ransom he replied “How can you possibly say I’m holding the government to ransom? All I’m doing is I’ve got them by the balls and I’m squeezing them, I’m not holding them to ransom – what’re you talking about?”. David has negotiated the passage or otherwise of LNP legislation through the upper house under both Prime Ministers Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull. What are David’s views on the two prime ministers? What other negotiating tricks does he deploy other than the “squeeze? These questions and more answered on the night!

More about David Leyonhjelm here.

SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT: Senator Malcolm Roberts, One Nation senator from Queensland.

malcolm-roberts

Malcolm was this year elected to the Federal Senate and has made an immediate impact on the political narrative. He’s best known for his skepticism of climate science but has recently questioned the legitimacy of the international banking system. Surprisingly he claims to be libertarian leaning yet represents a party, One Nation, with many policies directly opposed to libertarian philosophy. How does Senator Roberts reconcile these difference? Why does he believe climate science is fraudulent? These questions and more answered on the night!

SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT: Andrew Laming MP, Liberal Party MP for Bowman, Qld.

a-lamming

Andrew was first elected to the Qld lower house seat of Bowman in 2004 giving up a career as an eye surgeon and public health advisor.. In 2007 with the backlash against the Howard government, Andrew was re elected in a cliffhanger vote count that lasted many weeks. He eventually hung on by just 64 votes and has since then built Bowman into a safe Liberal seat winning the 2016 poll with a margin of 8.9%. Andrew’s parliamentary career is dotted with the odd controversy perhaps most amusingly when on Australia Day 2014 someone posted a video of him sculling a beer while performing a handstand. What has been Andrew’s experiences like under three different Prime Ministers? Can we get Andrew to repeat the handstand sculling trick? These questions and questions and more answered on the night!

Nick Cater & Alan Moran: Climate Change in the Trump Era

16729471_1223703614371940_7339005192960891799_n

Nick Cater introduces climate change economist, commentator and writer Alan Moran to speak about his new book “Climate Change: Treaties and Policies in the Trump Era”.

How will the Trump presidency effect climate change responses?
Who sets the climate agenda now?
What are the costs to Australia in pursuing the current agenda?
With Trump demolishing the Paris Agreement, what is Australia’s exit strategy?
How can we return to reliable, low-cost energy supply and avoid the debilitating policies favouring renewables?

These questions and more discussed and answered on the day by two of Australia’s most recognised commentators on these important and topical issues.

Special thanks to Connor Court Publishing, cosponsors of this important event.
