Institute of Public Affairs – Open Mind Workshop @ State Library of Victoria, Conference Centre
Oct 22 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Institute of Public Affairs - Open Mind Workshop @ State Library of Victoria, Conference Centre | Melbourne | Victoria | Australia

ipa-open-mind

The Institute of Public Affairs believes and understands that the distinct traditions of Western Civilisation should be an integral part of every young Australian’s education and formation.

On Saturday 22 October 2016, we will be holding a pilot workshop in Melbourne. Designed by the Director of the Institute of Public Affairs ‘Open Minds’ Programme, Susan Knopfelmacher, the workshop is aimed specifically at 15 and 16-year-olds. This will be the first in a series which the Institute of Public Affairs will run in other cities.

Thirty young people will spend the day in small groups exploring three major themes in an interactive, stimulating and engaging environment. Participants will be encouraged to communicate, defend, analyse, and critique the ideas presented to them during each session, and they will go home motivated, engaged and inspired.

WORKSHOP THEMES

SESSION 1 PLATO: BEGINNINGS OF WESTERN POLITICAL THOUGHT

An introduction to the beginning of Western Political thought, taking as a starting point Plato’s Republic and his Allegory of the Cave and what they mean for freedom and personal responsibility. Discover Plato’s ideas about the norms and rules that govern the political community which allow us to flourish as individuals.

SESSION 2 MAGNA CARTA: FOUNDATIONS OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY

The Magna Carta is one of the core documents and events which gave us individual liberty, the rule of law and parliamentary democracy. Understand the Magna Carta’s historical context and how it went from being a peace treaty to a fundamental statement about the relationship between the monarch and the people.

SESSION 3 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: ORIGINS OF MODERN LIBERTY

The Declaration of Independence and the American War for Independence started a fight for freedom and liberty which would stretch into the 20th century. The concepts embodied in Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address were taken up by future generations in the struggle for freedom during the 1960s American Civil Rights Movement.

Tickets are limited to 100 maximum so join us for a memorable time by securing your ticket now.

Following the turbulent, crazy, roller-coaster years of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, by late 2013 Australians were looking forward to a steady new era of boring, conservative, grown-up government under Tony Abbott and his Coalition.

Little did they know, the real fun had just begun.

In this hilarious selection from his weekly Australian Financial Review satirical columns, Rowan Dean chronicles Australia’s recent political mayhem, sorry, we mean history, in his unique tongue-in-cheek, ruthlessly subversive style. From the mysterious Granola virus to an outbreak of Todgers in the Lodge; from performing the Same Sex Kama Sutra and resisting the pull of Gravitational Waffle; from Sharia Law in Tassie to enjoying All the Gonski you can eat, Dean’s biting humour is an irresistible comic pleasure to savour.

Forget waiting for the weekend, now you can enjoy all of Dean’s satire right up to the present day in one superb collection.

Under Dean’s piercing gaze, Australian politics has never been so incorrect.

And has never been so much fun.
